Turkmenistan has been a geopolitical hub linking Europe and Russia/Middle East at the center of the Silk Road trade in the past, with a long and flourishing history of Margu civilization from 2500 BC. Over the past 10 years, it has grown rapidly, with an average economic growth rate of over 10%, and has emerged as a country with a particularly high future growth engine that has attracted much attention from global investors around the world.
Since its founding in 1974, Hyundai Engineering has achieved remarkable achievements in the fields of Process plant, Power & Energy plant, Building & Housing Works, Infrastructure & Environment, Asset Management R&D. around the world. With challenging spirit, Hyundai Engineering made a progressive decision to focus on the Turkmenistan market they sought to be a land of opportunity with the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reservoirs. As a result, Hyundai Engineering could join the largest plan project in Turkmenistan in 2009.

The first project that Hyundai Engineering participated in was the development of a Galkynysh gas field, which is one of the world's top five gas fields. It was a huge national project undertaken by Turkmenistan's state-owned gas company with a total of $8.5 billion. Hyundai Engineering was responsible for the construction of a gas desulfurization plant that removes residual sulfur and moisture from natural gas, and the project was worth $1.34 billion. The size of the construction field was as grand as the size of six soccer fields combined with 510m wide and 675m long. The annual gas capacity that the completed plant could process annually was 10 billion cubic meters, and when converted to oil, it reached approximately 63 billion barrels.
An essential momentum that made Hyundai Engineering able to open the door of opportunity seems to be the solid-relationship with the Turkmenistan government. It was clear that their effort was focused on swiftness and flexibility as well as keeping the project schedule. For example, even when transporting a total of 550 tons of heavy Eguipment, the driving force to successfully complete the 20,000-kilometer long journey from Korea to Turkmenistan Port and 1200 km to the Yoloten area contributed to gain credibility from the Turkmenistan government. The officials of the Turkmenistan state gas company, who watched the successful completion of the heavy-duty installation work, would raise their thumbs of respect to the workers of Hyundai Engineering, which is a proud moment for all Koreans.
In 2012, Hyundai Engineering won a contract for the Turkmenistan Refinery Project, which was once again requested by the state-owned oil refinery company in Turkmenistan for $460 million. Due to the trust Hyundai Engineering gained from the Turkmenistan government, the company was selected as the final contractor even when competing with major companies from Japan and Europe. The project consisted of a total of 3 units, including a vacuum distillation unit (VDU), an alkylation/isomerization unit (ALK/ISO, lkylation/isomerization unit), and a gasoline mixing unit (GMU) on a total site of 87,000㎡.

After the successful completion on the project of Hyundai Engineering in October 2015, the old factory, that once processed 2 million tons of crude oil, has been transformed into a factory that produces high-quality gasoline with a high octane number. Subsequently, in 2013, a project to build a crude oil processing facility with a daily production capacity of 10,000 barrels in the Kiyanri region off the Caspian Sea was awarded for $240 million. In the same year, the Turkmenistan State Gas Corporation also entrusted Hyundai Engineering with an ethane cracker production facility project that can produce polyethylene and polypropylene in Kiyanri. It was a large-scale project with a total project value of $ 2.9 billion, and it was an opportunity to reaffirm the trust of the Turkmenistan government toward Hyundai Engineering.
In particular, President Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow visited the construction site of ethane crackers and PE/PP production facilities in early 2017, toured the site, and held meetings with employees. When management visited the field in Korea, they showed a deep interest, such as having direct interview time and discussing future cooperation. On the other hand, since its first relationship with Turkmenistan, Hyundai Engineering has been making efforts not only in business but also in community contribution and cultural exchange in order to gain the trust of the people of Turkmenistan.
In May 2010, the Turkmenistan Cultural Press Delegation visited Korea as a civilian diplomat at the 2010 Global Hanmadang Feast. At the time, in order to contribute to cooperation between the two countries, Hyundai Engineering also sponsored the “Turkmenistan Culture Day” event, which introduces Turkmenistan culture to the Korean people. At the Yeosu Expo held in June 2012 in Korea, the company led the promotion of the Turkmenistan Pavilion and cooperated to introduce the contents of the exhibition hall through domestic media as well as the relationship with Hyundai Engineering. In addition, Hyundai Engineering employees showed their friendship and loyalty by visiting the stadium directly with the Turkmenistan flag to support the volleyball and boxing match of the Turkmenistan national team at the 17th Incheon Asian Games in 2014.
In Turkmenistan, the Yoloten region also sponsored facilities for disabled children or frequently held bazaars for local residents to help them communicate to each other. The support of the uniform for the youth football team Ashgabad City “Chandville” was also introduced in the Turkmenistan national newspaper.

They also acted as a bridge for disseminating Korean plant construction technology.
In May 2016, the ``welding technology training center'' was opened to cultivate personnel in special functions such as welding/scaffolding at the construction site of ethane crackers and PE/PP production facilities. In January 2017, the ``Electricity / Instrument Training Center'' was opened. In addition, by opening additionally, the curriculum was expanded to receive great attention from the community and to enhance the company's image. In particular, the graduates of the welding technology training center and the electrical/instrument training center were all hired by Hyundai Engineering and partner companies making great contribution to the expansion of local employment.
