Dear Sir / Madam:
I am addressing to you to appeal to your solidarity for the victims of the serious
natural disasters that have been affecting Peru. I would not be send this letter if the
situation were not extremely serious.
Peru Amb. Jaime Pomareda |
Severe rains and landslides that have hit the northern coast of Peru, caused by "El Niño
Costero", have claimed at least 90 lives and hundreds of thousands of people have
been affected since January, while facing water shortages and praying for the wrath of
nature to cease.
Unfortunately, more than 90 people died and there are more than 122,000 people
homeless – which means that they have lost everything -, and 700,000 people affected –
those who suffered considerable damage -. In addition, more than 4,000 km of highways,
5,000 km ofrural roads and 200 bridges are destroyed, making the “El Niño Costero”
one of the biggest natural catastrophes ever to hit the northern coast of Peru.
"El Niño Costero", is a sea warming phenomenon that takes place in front of the
Peruvian coast, generating an exponential increasing of water evaporation and black
clouds. The absence of winds favors its permanence in almost the same place. After
black clouds become rain clouds, precipitation increases the flow of rivers, which
destroy everything in their path to the sea.
There are 811 emergency districts of the more than 2,800 along Peruvian territory,
mainly on the north coast of Peru. Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad are the most
affected because of the days in which they are flooded.
The Peruvian Government has increased its budget by $ 764 million for a reconstruction
that has not yet begun. For instance, the priority is to save lives, set free the roads,
rescue people and contain the advance of rivers, which like the rains, will continue
for several more weeks ..
Many countries and citizens around the world have come to the aid of Peru and Korea
is not an exception. For this purpose, the Embassy of Peru in Seoul opened the Account
No. 107-910017 40204, in KEBHANA Bank, aimed to obtain the generous and humanitarian donations
of the Korean people. Your contribution will be deeply appreciated.
