The Embassy of Mongolia in Seoul hosted a grand celebration at the Ambassador Hotel to mark two significant milestones: the 863rd anniversary of the birth of Chinggis Khaan—Mongolia’s revered national hero—and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the Republic of Korea.

Mongolia, a nation of vast steppes, rich nomadic heritage, and deep historical pride, has long honored Chinggis Khaan as the founder of the Mongol Empire and a symbol of unity and national identity. Today, the country stands as a dynamic democracy with growing economic potential and a forward-looking global presence.

Since establishing formal diplomatic ties in 1990, Mongolia and Korea have cultivated a warm and mutually supportive partnership grounded in shared democratic values, cultural affinity, and expanding economic cooperation. Over the past 35 years, bilateral relations have flourished across diverse fields—ranging from trade and investment to education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Against this meaningful backdrop, the commemorative event in Seoul not only highlighted Mongolia’s proud historical legacy but also underscored the enduring friendship and future-oriented collaboration between the two nations.

In his congratulatory remarks, the Ambassador of Mongolia emphasized the significance of celebrating the birth of the great Chinggis Khaan—an eternal symbol of national pride for the Mongolian people, a towering figure of the millennium, and one of the architects of the modern world order. He expressed heartfelt appreciation to all those whose dedication and commitment have elevated Mongolia–Korea relations to their current level, extending special thanks to government officials, leaders across various sectors, diplomats, and scholars.

The Ambassador noted that the ties between the two nations extend far beyond the 35 years of formal diplomatic relations. Historical records show that the Khitan Empire engaged with Goryeo as early as 955, and during the era of Chinggis Khaan in 1219, the two nations pledged an eternal bond, swearing to maintain their friendship for generations as “brotherly nations.” Over the past 35 years, Mongolia and Korea have strengthened and expanded cooperation across all fields—including politics, economy, trade, investment, culture, education, and public health—under the foundation of a strategic partnership.

He highlighted that bilateral trade, which stood at merely USD 2.7 million in the early 1990s, has now grown to USD 670 million. Interest in Korean culture has risen significantly, with some 17,000 Mongolian students currently studying in Korea, while Korean language education is actively conducted in Mongolia through 44 primary and secondary schools and over 10 universities. The two nations are also deepening collaboration in strategically important sectors such as critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge technologies.
