Over the years, our alliance has developed into a multi-faceted partnership that has flourished in many different areas: security, trade and economic development, people-to-people ties, international cooperation.

Our economic cooperation is a vital component of our shared success. The United States and Korea already have one of the most vibrant trading relationships in the world. Korea is our seventh largest trading partner, and the United States is South Korea’s third largest trading partner.

In March, the KORUS-FTA, our most commercially significant FTA in nearly two decades, went into effect. KORUS strengthens our economic partnership; it opens up new opportunities for American businesses in Korea, and for Korean businesses in the United States; it brings great benefits to consumers in both countries. While it is still in the early stages of implementation, we are seeing positive signs and are working closely with the Korean government to ensure benefits for both sides are fully realized.

As President Obama has said – our future economic growth and international competitiveness depend on our capacity to innovate. Innovation-based economic growth will bring greater incomes, higher quality jobs, and improved health and quality of life. America has a proud tradition of innovation and Korea is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most innovative countries. Working together, we can create sustainable growth and strengthen the extraordinary bond between our two countries.

We do not have to look far to find examples of collaboration. Just a few blocks down the street, the new City Hall building is an eco-friendly landmark that uses the largest volume of renewable energy among all buildings in Korea. It features over 7,000 energy efficient glass panes--6,000 of which were manufactured by Pittsburgh Plate Glass, an American company.

A small, woman-owned Korean company called DGS makes innovative vehicle brake clips incorporating an American product: DuPont’s Teflon. Several major international automakers, including those in the United States and Korea, are purchasing these clips.

While the private sector is undoubtedly the innovation engine, government also has an important role to play in facilitating innovation: investing in education and basic research to provide the talent pool and foundation for innovation; creating a healthy eco-system that fosters fair competition and protects intellectual property rights; and ensuring regulations encourage, rather than impede, innovation. Sometimes, the best thing government can do is to just get out of the way.

I applaud AMCHAM for recognizing the importance of innovation and creating this forum for discussion and cooperation. I thank the Ministry of Knowledge Economy for being a part of this exciting initiative. And very much I look forward to having meaningful discussions with industry leaders and policy makers, working together to ensure we continue on the right path, and using innovation to create a brighter future for both of our nations.

AMCHAM said it is proud to have worked hand-in-hand with Korean companies and consumers in the last 60 years, including helping to rebuild the country in the aftermath of the Korean War, employing tens of thousands of Korean workers and providing goods and services to citizens.
The economic partnership between the United States and Korea is becoming stronger today than ever with the successful implementation of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (the United States is Korea’s third largest trading partner with $101 billion in bilateral trade in 2011 according to Korea Customs Service, January 2012). The most successful U.S. and Korean companies are leaders in innovation and they are increasingly coming together to form strategic partnerships. Innovation is also recognized as a key growth engine that helps create new jobs and ensure sustainable growth for both economies. The AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future is established to strengthen the already-strong economic ties by expanding strategic partnerships between U.S. and Korean companies.
At the press conference, AMCHAM announced the future plans of the Council, emphasizing its potential to be a catalyst for promoting innovation and creating new jobs and opportunities in both countries. The Council plans to discuss pro-innovation policies that the Korean government can adopt to promote innovation in diverse sectors and identify win-win strategies for forming new partnerships between companies. It will also invite key speakers from both countries who are innovation leaders in their fields in order to identify ways in which innovation can be promoted further in Korea. Furthermore, the Council will seek to promote Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focused on fostering innovative studies in Korean universities and other activities.
The AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future will be composed of the Honorable Sung Kim (U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea) as the Honorary Chairman, James Kim (General Manager of Microsoft Korea) as Chairman, Amy Jackson (AMCHAM) as President, Advisors from the key sectors and Special Advisors.
The Deputy Minister for Trade and Investment from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) will join the Council as a Special Advisor, as stated in the MOU signed between AMCHAM and MKE on September 5, 2012
The Council will meet periodically to discuss and plan events and activities related to the theme of promoting innovation
MKE said that “In the background of rising Korea-U.S. bilateral foreign direct investments following the KORUS FTA, we will fully support the work of the AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future which will encourage sharing of innovation model cases and encourage more active exchange between the two nations.”
In his remarks, AMCHAM Chairman Pat Gaines discussed the importance AMCHAM places on helping Korea achieve its economic goals and promoting new and innovative partnerships between U.S. and Korean companies, both large and small.
James Kim, the inaugural Chairman of the Council, stressed that “both the U.S. and Korea are leaders in innovation. Working together, we can achieve truly amazing results to the benefit of both countries.”
